Proper pruning to help maintain tree health, promote strong growth, and reduce safety hazards. Follow this checklist to ensure safe and effective pruning.
1. Safety Precautions
Wear appropriate PPE (helmet, eye protection, gloves, and safety boots). Use properly maintained tools (hand saws, pruning shears, pole saws, and chainsaws).
Ensure a stable work area, especially on uneven ground.
Follow OSHA ladder safety guidelines if climbing is required.
Be aware of nearby power lines and structures.
2. Timing & Frequency
Best pruning time: Late winter to early spring before new growth begins.
Avoid pruning during peak growing season (late spring/summer) to minimize stress.
Remove dead or damaged branches as needed throughout the year.
3. Identifying Branches for Removal
Remove dead, diseased, or broken limbs. Eliminate crossing/rubbing branches.
Thin overcrowded areas to improve airflow and light penetration.
Avoid removing more than 25% of live branches in a single season.
4. Proper Pruning Techniques
Use the 3-cut method for large limbs:
1. First Cut: Make an undercut “12 inches from the trunk.
2. Second Cut: Make an overcut just outside the undercut to remove the limb.
3. Final Cut: Remove the stub just outside the branch collar (without damaging it). Make clean, angled cuts to prevent water pooling and decay.
Avoid flush cuts; always leave the branch collar intact.
Do not use pruning paint or sealants let the tree heal naturally.
5. Post-Pruning Care & Cleanup
Remove all debris to prevent pest infestations and disease spread.
Inspect trees for signs of stress (yellowing of leaves/needles) or disease (bark degrading/sap leaking) after pruning.
Water and mulch young trees to promote recovery.
